When we headed out in 2008 for our second white shark expedition, there was a lot of excitement and expectation with the crew initially. We had a much better idea of what we were going to face in trying to capture and release these true giants of Guadalupe.
Brett had been working on perfecting gear, Doc had been perfecting the tags (our first-year results were disappointing). We had proved we could capture and release great white sharks in good condition, but our tags were not performing like we had hoped.
Garmin gave us an incredible roundtrip track out to Hawaii and back to Guadalupe and that was exciting, but we needed the giant females to reveal their more complicated multi-year migrations.
It was strange heading out because we did not have a TV gig for the show. I was fulfilling my promise to Doc to help him place the tags on white sharks to solve this very difficult puzzle. I was unable to sell the series after the first year and had completed my obligation for the delivery of the last Offshore Adventures episodes. The crew did not know I had put everything I had on the line and was almost out of money.
I was preparing the crew, my family, and my own emotions to sell the ship and to give up my dream of becoming the next Jacque Cousteau. The dream of bringing the world’s oceans into people's homes so they were aware of what was happening there so that we could ensure future generations would enjoy an ocean with robust fish stocks.
I committed to Doc to getting those tags on the sharks because I felt we had a moral obligation to capture and tag these fish. I felt we were the only people in the world that could do it. If we didn't, this puzzle may never be solved. The Great White may suffer long term if we did not deliver for Doc.
So, on the trip out I was trying to emotionally prepare for this to be the last trip. I spoke with my crew openly, especially Capt Brett. He had been with me from the beginning, and we had had so many days on the water together. We faced many challenges together and through it all we had made it through together.
On the trip out, I told the guys that we were going to return to the production office after the trip and make a pilot and I was going to try to sell it. I told them, I could hold on for three months, and that was the time we had left, to either make it happen and have a chance to make an impact on the awareness and state of the world’s oceans on a global scale, or we were going to have to sell the ship and watch dreams evaporate. We had to succeed in capturing and releasing the biggest fish of all time, get back to the office to prepare a pilot and then sell it in three months.
I believed we could do it, and told the guys it was not over, but we were facing our biggest challenge ever.
There was enough talk of that when we first headed out of San Diego to Ensenada, so after that, there was no more talk of potential negative outcomes. It was time to focus on the task ahead of us. After all, we were headed out to capture giant great white sharks and people were going to be faced with danger that could lead to significant injury or death.
Sometimes you got to lay it all on the line to make great things happen.

Heres Some awesome pics I captured from the show!!
